Incentives For Your Team That Won’t Cost You A Cent

When it comes to recognising the efforts of our team we rarely say "thank you" enough.

Yet it's one of the simplest ways to unequivocally show your team that their efforts are appreciated and it helps to keep them passionate and motivated. And that's never a bad thing.

So, how many of these "out-of-the-box" no-cost thank you's do you extend to your team?

  • Remember to recognise an individual's efforts publicly at your next team gathering. Increase the energy in the room with a standing ovation.

  • Emailing your recognition to the team member and ensuring it is copied to the wider group.

  • Create a "Wall of Fame" in a communal area such as a lunchroom or, better still, a meeting room where you get together with clients.

  • Provide them with access to a mentor (perhaps you) for a period of time.

  • Give them access to a preferred working area for a week such as an unused office.

  • Introduce a "Casual Friday" type day in recognition of that team member.

  • Write a LinkedIn recommendation for them.

  • Offer them a BDO (bonus day off) (or half day) which they can take at their leisure.

  • Create an appreciation certificate or a trophy. The trophy could be something fun or unusual and may have started its life in the office in a different form. Spray-paint it with gold paint to make it distinctive.

  • Reward them with flexible working hours or a long lunch.

  • Invite them to get involved in a side project that might be of particular interest to them.

  • Write a note to their family sharing how important their contribution is to your business.

  • Get team members to write a positive note about the person. You could present them in a frame for their desk (it's such a shame we usually leave these notes to the farewell card).

  • Introduce a "playtime" where team members can catch up, play games or Facebook without any pangs of guilt.

  • Literally give the team member a "high five" when they have done something that warrants recognition and encourage other team members to do the same.

And always remember to say those magic words, "THANK YOU". It costs you nothing to show your appreciation however the payback is priceless.
