Unique Ways to Show Appreciation to Your Team

Thursday, April 02, 2015   By Mike Reddy

Though you probably appreciate your employees a great deal, often in the course of a day you likely fail to show them. Here are some unique ways to show your employees appreciation, keep them motivated and loyal, and help your business continue to move forward successfully.

Compliment Your Staff. Offer a verbal compliment whenever appropriate during the work day whenever you notice hard work, a project well-done or ahead of schedule, excellent teamwork and more. Verbal acknowledgement from you, particularly in front of peers, is a wonderful motivator.  How many times have you done that this week?

Card, Letter, Email Or Text. A simple continuation of the compliment mentioned above, sending a card, letter, email or even a text message conveying thanks, acknowledging exceptional work or other success not only shocks them, it encourages employees to do more of the same!

Offer A Flex Time. This is a great way to show your team that you understand they have a life outside of work. Even if you can’t offer a flex-time option all the time, you can offer it in case of special circumstances and emergencies or illnesses with family, children and even pets. You’ll benefit your team’s work life balance and strengthen your working relationships.

Provide An Impromptu Meal. This can take several forms and requires a bit of planning. It could take the form of you treating your team to lunch out at the restaurant of their choice or you hiring a local caterer to prepare a special lunch with all the trimmings. Either way, it’s a wonderful thank-you for your team!  It doesn’t only have to be on Melbourne Cup day!

Offer Extra Opportunities. Provide your team with opportunities to cross-train in different areas of your business or give the option of attending professional training in an area of interest to them. Pay for a conference or workshop they’d like to attend. Provide the benefit of membership to professional associations. These perks say thank-you and benefit both of your with extra knowledge and skills.

Give A Gift Or Bonus. While a bonus is always appreciated for a job well-done, sometimes it’s just not a practical offering in a small business - but if you can afford it you should do! If not, how about giving a unique gift that your employees will appreciate. Gifts can be as simple as tickets to a movie or a sporting event, a bottle of wine or a day off; either way you learn about your employees’ interests, thank them with a distinctive gift and build rapport with your employees.
